Sundogs

The river's always high this time of year
I hear it climb the banks and roar like a passing train
I've spent my life here in this valley I call home
Forty years and yet I ain't got much to show

Someday I'm gonna leave this town
Someday I'll finally chase those sundogs down

She worked doubles at the diner on the weekends
The way she smiled belied an aching in her eyes
She was everything a man like me could dream of
And I'd been dreaming of her most of my life

Someday I'm gonna leave this town
Someday I'll finally chase those sundogs down

Last fall they found her face-down in the water
The paper said her car nearby was packed
I don't remember much for weeks thereafter
Except the sound of the river through the trees

Someday I'm gonna leave this town
Someday I'll finally chase those sundogs down
And the river will still roar without me around
