When Summer Ends

The Ferris wheel twists slowly in the twilit sky
The barker clears his throat, gives it one last try:
"Come and see the greatest show on earth while you still can"
The midway closes up when summer ends

I love to watch you fly on the trapeze at night
I'm told I walk a high-wire or two myself
We both are getting high, but mine is in my head
The midway closes up when summer ends

Tonight is not tomorrow, but tomorrow's coming fast
So hold on to the things in life you're sure are gonna last
I wanted you to stay with me; you said it all depends
You'll be somewhere else when summer ends

The kids pile on the carousel for one last ride
While carnies smoke their cigarettes and watch the world go by
We could have been something, but I fell short instead
The midway closes up when summer ends
You'll be somewhere else when summer ends
And I will still be gone when summer ends
